Re: “Local officials discuss Los Altos’ first all-affordable housing project” (Feb. 2):
For the first time in many years, I feel proud to live in Los Altos. This is because the city council is finally allowing affordable housing to be built. The decision not to stop development of new housing is the responsible, equitable and environmental thing to do.
For years now, the Association of Bay Area Governments has asked Los Altos to build our share of new housing in order to solve this terrible housing crisis. I felt ashamed as Los Altos repeatedly refused to do its part.
The only way that we can address the growing inequality in our country is to provide affordable housing in cities like Los Altos. When children living in Distel Circle attend quality Los Altos schools, they will have a shot at the elusive American dream. ....

Local salons, restaurants take another shot at reopening

Local salons, restaurants take another shot at reopening
An employee of Essence Salon in Mountain View shampoos a customer’s hair Sunday.
It took repeated shutdowns for Sarah Zebb, owner of Therapy Salon in Los Altos with her husband, Todd, to fully understand the popularity of her industry. Since the most recent shelter-in-place orders were lifted earlier this week, allowing personal care services to open at 20% capacity, Zebb’s phone has been ringing off the hook.
“I never knew hair was so important,” she said, joking that the personal care industry will never be taken over by robots.
Zebb’s salon has been closed more than six weeks, since the Bay Area shut down again due to the winter COVID-19 surge. Even when she opens next week, things will be different. Eight of her stylists have left; only three remain. Zebb can’t book too many people, because she has to sanitize the stations, and capacity restrictions limit the salon to having six people in ....

Employees at The Post construct a parklet in October outside the restaurant for outdoor dining. The restaurant had planned to defy recent restrictions and reopen outdoor dining this week.

At least one Los Altos restaurant planned to defy the state’s ban on outdoor dining as part of the latest shelter-in-place order that began this week, but reversed course after city officials said they would crack down on potential violations.
The Post, an eatery at the corner of Main and First streets, was going to reopen on Thursday, according to its owner, Vickie Breslin. But that morning, downtown restaurant owners received a strongly worded email from the city’s economic development coordinator, Anthony Carnesecca. It stated that any restaurant that tried to defy restrictions could be served wit ....
