The Stinky Ocean | Ian Jack

1. Under the clouds

I left home in Fife and went to live in Glasgow when I was eighteen. When I think of it now, the distance seems laughably small – forty miles, little more than an hour in the train – but the contrast between a village on the east coast and a city, Scotland’s largest, on the west coast was sharp and exciting. I had a bedsit in a dark street of better-class tenements, with a Polish delicatessen, a dance hall and a cinema just round the corner. Glasgow seemed an infinite place, never to be known completely no matter how many suburban bus terminals you reached or exploratory walks you made. It was 1963. The last trams had run the year before, but the city was still much its old self – smoke-blackened, run-down, Victorian, majestic, tipsy on beer and whisky on a Saturday night, hushed on a Sunday. More than a million people lived there then; forty years later, that figure had almost halved. ....

Unicorn Skull For Sale as Museum of Oddities Tries to Stay in Business

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and if you’re tired of getting your mom the same old flowers and candy, you can make this a Mother’s Day to remember by presenting her with a unicorn skull. Or maybe she’d like a bone from a dodo bird. How about a stuffed bat with two heads, a stuffed winged kitten, or the world’s largest bean pod? All of those and many, many more strange items are up for auction right now as Viktor Wynd, the owner of Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art and Unnatural History, has been forced by the business downturn caused by the pandemic to sell off some of his ‘treasures’. Would Mom like a pair of Victorian knickers worn by the actual Queen Victoria herself? ....

Taxidermy flying kittens, Irish giants and Queen Victoria's knickers: the world of Viktor Wynd

Viktor Wynd is blissfully disinterested in NFTs.
I m sitting in a shed in rural England working in porcelain and bronze as people have done for thousands of years, and I don t like looking at screens so..I m not actually sure what an NFT is, other than it has nothing to do with me and I don t know what I d do with one.
Wynd is, by his own definition, a pataphysicist, writer, curator, collector, dealer, dilettante, naturalist and antiquarian . Alongside organising extravagant parties such as masked balls and halloween parties under The Last Tuesday Society, Wynd has quite the strangest museum in London The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, a tiny institution on Mare Street in Hackney that is full to the gunnels with everything from McDonald s Happy Meal Toys to dodo bones, old master etchings to taxidermied two-headed kittens (not the place to go on a hangover). ....

London Calling

Divine Images. The Life and Work of William Blake, Jason Whittaker (hbck, 392pp, £25, Reaktion Books)
Reaktion Books were previously responsible for a wonderful series called Topographics, that included many titles which came at place[s] from a number of oblique angles. Their current Cityscopes editions are more straightforward: a potted history, some essays on the contemporary city, along with a profusion of photographs, marketed as ‘essential cultural companions to the world’s greatest cities’.
Phil Baker does a nice job of summarising London’s history from 1000BC onwards. His prose is engaging and concise, and swiftly transports the reader into the current day in just 140 pages, having swiftly dealt with the Romans, the expansion of the medieval city, plagues, fires, punks and yuppies en route. It’s a well told summary, but I am less convinced by the rest of the book, which features essays on ‘The City Today’ followed by a ‘Listings’ section which inc ....
