Book excerpt: Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures

Some might say it’s preposterous to think an overview of a massive story repository such as Craigdarroch Castle can be reduced to not even two dozen objects. …
Why twenty-one objects? The number may seem a bit arbitrary, but it comes from the desire to vary the story of the castle’s nineteenth-century beginnings and carry it forward to the current century for contemporary readers and for future generations, with each object used as a hook on which to hang a story and offer some context and tangential information.
Craigdarroch Castle houses more than just the stories of the shipping, railway, and coal baron (and western Canada’s richest man, for a time) Robert Dunsmuir, his wife, Joan, and the fractious, fractured family he left behind. It also cradles the stories of the maimed and shell-shocked men sent home by the Empire after the Great War and cared for from 1919 to 1921 at Craigdarroch Military Hospital, as well as those of Victoria College, the Victoria Cons ....

Critic's picks: Pacific Opera sopranos, Ken Lavigne, Spark to Flame showcase

Tickets: $12 from tickets.porttheatre.com or 250-754-8550
Why: Chemainus singer Ken Lavigne always manages to look and sound like a million bucks, so don’t expect any drop in quality now that his concert at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre on Saturday night is a livestream rather than an in-person performance. The title is a reference to the music of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John, members of British pop music’s aristocracy; Lavigne, of course, is the titular tenor who ties it all together. The graceful singer livestreamed last month from the stage of Campbell River’s Tidemark, so he’ll arrive inspired this weekend. And with an esteemed catalogue from which to choose watch for Rocket Man, Hey Jude, and staples of Webber stage musicals Evita, Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Saturday night will be all right, indeed. ....
