Why Kano, PH, Enugu are Yet to Resume International Flights

Chinedu Eze
The federal government’s delay in issuing notice to airmen (NOTAM) and low passenger turnout are key factors delaying the resumption of international flights from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
This is just as THISDAY learnt on Wednesday that the alleged insistence by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that only Emirates Airlines would be allowed to operate to Dubai from Nigeria has prompted the Minister of Aviation to deny the Middle East airline the approval to resume flights to Abuja and Lagos.
THISDAY investigations revealed that after the special flights operated by Ethiopia Airlines and Egypt Air on April 6, 2021, from Kano to Addis Ababa and Cairo respectively, international flight service was expected to have officially opened from the Kano airport, but airlines are yet to complete their documentations to kick-off operations from there. ....

FG probes death of 'stowaway' on Lagos-Amsterdam flight

Already the Dutch authorities have launched an investigation into the man’s identity and cause of death after he was discovered inside a wheel arch.
“We are investigating the discovery of mortal remains in the landing gear of an airplane from Lagos (Nigeria),” the Dutch police force wrote on Twitter.
The man, who is thought to have been a stowaway, was suspected to have died of hypothermia ostensibly due to loss of oxygen.
The incidents of stowaway are not new in Nigerian aviation with youths taking daring moves to hide under the gear compartment of aircraft.
On April 2, 2017, another stowaway was found on a Lagos-London Med-View Airline flight but the boy miraculously survived the over six hours flight to London Gatwick where he was arrested. ....

Abandoned airplanes in a Nigerian airport
By passenger traffic or flight movements, Nigeria ranks nowhere near the world’s top aviation countries. But the country has an odd record in the number of unserviceable and dead airplanes competing for space with serviceable ones at airports nationwide. WOLE OYEBADE examines why the mortality rate for airplanes is high without consideration for revenue-earning secondary value. However, stakeholders are unanimous that a complement of realistic business models, better efficiency in maintenance culture, after-service storage programmes, and development of aviation-based tourism and hospitality outlets could change the narrative.

On the ground, she is as big as a house with imposing elegance that beautifies skylines. But there she has been in the last four years, idle and with love ....
