Florida Environmental Groups Urge Veto of Bill That Would Override Community Decisions on Shipping and Cruise Ship Pollution
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – 23 organizations signed on to a letter urging Governor DeSantis to veto HB 267/SB 426 if it is voted up, legislation that would create preemptions for home rule over seaports.
Ocean Conservancy and a group of 22 other organizations today urged Governor DeSantis to exercise his veto authority on a key home rule issue if it is sent to his desk. The existing legislation is written so broadly that it would prevent local governments and port authorities from establishing regulations that would restrict emissions from the shipping and cruise line industries in their home waterways. ....

Legislation aimed at undoing three local referendums passed last year in Key West cleared its final committee stop in the Senate Wednesday.
While the legislation may be aimed at the Keys, it would limit the ability of any Florida city or county to regulate their ports.
Key west approved three referendums last year pushing for more environmentally friendly cruise ships and limiting the size and number of cruise ships that could dock in their port.
“Smaller, safer, cleaner ships,” said Captain Will Benson with the National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. ....

The public relations scar might run deeper than the industry likes to admit. A recent survey of 600 cruisers and non-cruisers in the UK and Australia, for example, revealed that 47 percent did not trust cruise lines to look after them if something went wrong during a voyage, while a staggering 67 percent were less willing to cruise because of the pandemic. ....
