Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, reported the discovery of a potential new target for immunotherapy of malignant brain tumors. The team used single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to study gene expression and the clonal landscape of tumor-infiltrating T cells across more than 30 patients with diffuse gliomas and glioblastoma. Their work indicated that the immune cell surface receptor, CD161, suppresses the cancer-fighting activity of immune T cells, and is activated by its ligand, CLEC2D, on tumor cells and immune-suppressing cells in the brain. Their studies showed that genetically deleting the KLRB1 that codes for CD161, or using antibodies to block CD161, increased T cell-mediated killing of glioma cells in vitro and ....

Study finds new evidence of health threat from chemicals in marijuana and tobacco smoke

Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have uncovered new evidence of the potential health risks of chemicals in tobacco and marijuana smoke.
In a study published online today by
EClinicalMedicine, the researchers report that people who smoked only marijuana had several smoke-related toxic chemicals in their blood and urine, but at lower levels than those who smoked both tobacco and marijuana or tobacco only. Two of those chemicals, acrylonitrile and acrylamide, are known to be toxic at high levels. The investigators also found that exposure to acrolein, a chemical produced by the combustion of a variety of materials, increases with tobacco smoking but not marijuana smoking and contributes to cardiovascular disease in tobacco smokers. ....

Smoking marijuana exposes you to low levels of the same toxic chemicals found in tobacco smoke

Smoking marijuana exposes the body to some of the same toxic chemicals released from tobacco, but at lower levels, according to a new study.
Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at the levels of several dangerous chemicals in the blood and urine of 245 volunteers.
Some of the volunteers didn t smoke, some smoked either weed or tobacco and dome smoked a combination of both.
They found that those who only smoked marijuana still had several smoke-related toxic chemicals in their system - but at lower levels than those who also or only smoked tobacco. ....
