Atom interferometry demonstrated in space for first time

Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz
Researchers present results of experiments with atom interferometry on a sounding rocket / Further rocket missions set to follow
Extremely precise measurements are possible using atom interferometers that employ the wave character of atoms for this purpose. They can thus be used, for example, to measure the gravitational field of the Earth or to detect gravitational waves. A team of scientists from Germany has now managed to successfully perform atom interferometry in space for the first time – on board a sounding rocket. “We have established the technological basis for atom interferometry on board of a sounding rocket and demonstrated that such experiments are not only possible on Earth, but also in space,” said Professor Patrick Windpassinger of the Institute of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), whose team was involved in the investigation. The results of the ....

An Essential Balancing Act: Neurons Adapt to Stay Steady

Weizmann Institute of Science
Our brain has On and Off switches for all its activities, and maintaining a balance between the two is crucial for our health and well-being. For instance: Epileptic seizures occur when the On signals run amok in the cortex, while people with Parkinson’s disease have difficulty using their muscles because of an excess of Off signals in the brain’s motor regions. In memory circuits, an overzealous On can force irrelevant memories upon us, as in posttraumatic stress disorder, whereas an overly active Off can prevent us from remembering anything at all.
In a new study reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Tübingen, have revealed how the brain keeps the On-Off balance steady. They discovered that this balance is programmed into the basic mechanisms through which individual neurons connect with one another ....

Parkinson's disease: wearable sensors to track symptoms

Parkinson’s disease: wearable sensors to track symptoms
EPFL scientists have developed algorithms that, combined with wearable sensors, could help clinicians to monitor the progression of Parkinson’s disease and assess the effects of medications commonly used by people with this neurodegenerative disorder.
Parkinson’s disease affects neurons in an area of the brain that controls movement, causing tremors, difficulty walking and other motor problems. Doctors caring for people with Parkinson’s disease need to be able to assess the severity of the symptoms and alter the doses of medications that reduce such symptoms. To do so, clinicians rely on a handful of tests, such as those that measure gait speed – or how fast people walk. However, these tests are typically conducted in the clinic once every few months, and results can be affected by several factors including the experience of the person conducting the assessment. ....

Newly launched British biotech company pioneers ground-breaking potential treatments for COVID-19

University of Bristol
University of Bristol
A team of top scientists from the University of Bristol have announced the formation of a new biotech company that is developing ground-breaking and newly patented potential treatments for coronavirus.
Halo Therapeutics Ltd is preparing for clinical trials into pivotal, cost-effective antiviral treatments for COVID-19, after discovering a molecule which changes the shape of the virus’s spike protein and in so doing inhibits the virus’ ability to enter cells.
Studies show the treatments are potentially ‘pan-corona antivirals’ in that they will work against all coronavirus strains – including the highly contagious ‘UK (Kent)’, ‘South African’ and ‘Brazilian’ variants. ....
