For UVA Astronomers, New Space Telescope Could Be a ‘Game-Changer’
When the James Webb Space Telescope launches in October, it will be the world’s premier space science observatory. Its combination of high-resolution and infrared-detecting instruments is expected to provide astronomers with a wealth of detailed data – not only on individual stars in the local universe, but also an unprecedented level of detail of what’s happening at the cores of other galaxies.
Among those eagerly awaiting the Webb telescope’s launch are a pair of University of Virginia astronomers leading and working on two of the 13 Early Release Science projects selected by NASA and its partners, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, to test its capabilities. Data from Aaron Evans’s and Nitya Kallivayalil’s projects, as well as from the other 11 Early Release Science programs, will be made available to other astronomers immediately, and archived for futur ....

Genetic study uncovers hidden pieces of eye disease puzzle
Scientists have taken a significant step forward in their search for the origin of a progressive eye condition which can cause sight loss.
A new study into keratoconus by an international team of researchers, including a Leeds group led by Chris Inglehearn, Professor of Molecular Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine, has for the first time detected DNA variations which could provide clues as to how the disease develops.
Keratoconus causes the cornea, the clear outer layer at the front of the eye, to thin and bulge outwards into a cone shape over time, resulting in blurred vision and sometimes blindness. It usually emerges in young adulthood, often with lifelong consequences, and affects on average 1 in 375, though in some populations this figure is much higher. ....

Rock lobsters may be vulnerable to climate change and lobster fishers may have to travel further to snare the delicacy in the future, according to a new study published this month (March 2021).
British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists were part of a team that examined the Tristan and St Paul rock lobster species that inhabit seamounts and islands in the southern Atlantic and Indian Ocean respectively – separated by thousands of kilometres.
They provided the numerical modelling component, using the national supercomputer ARCHER.

Ultrasonic cleaning of salad could reduce instances of food poisoning
A new study has shown that streams of water carrying sound and microscopic air bubbles can clean bacteria from salad leaves more effectively than current washing methods used by suppliers and consumers. As well as reducing food poisoning, the findings could reduce food waste and have implications for the growing threat of anti-microbial resistance.
Salad and leafy green vegetables may be contaminated with harmful bacteria during growing, harvesting, preparation and retail leading to outbreaks of food poisoning which may be fatal in vulnerable groups.
Because there is no cooking process to reduce the microbial load in fresh salads, washing is vital by the supplier and the consumer. ....
