A special Barnstable Planning Board meeting Monday focused on a proposed zoning amendment to allow certain dwelling units, or family apartments, as an accessory use to a single-family home. An accessory dwelling unit is defined as a smaller residential dwelling located on the same lot as a stand-alone or detached single-family home, said Elizabeth Jenkins, Barnstable Planning and Development director. It can be detached, attached or somehow incorporated onto an existing lot. The purpose and intent of the ordinance is to promote year-around housing in Barnstable and support aging in place, Jenkins said. Planning Board chairman Steven Costello noted that allowing accessory dwelling units by right is a recommended use within the Cape Cod Commission s Housing Plan, which is designed to increase housing choices. ....

And their plan was to stay in it through retirement. I really like my house, Jennings says, standing in the front yard. A two-story home. A swimming pool in the backyard. But Jennings neighborhood has flooded more often in recent years. His house did once, too. His mortgage requires flood insurance, which now costs him $2,336 a year and is set to increase 18% in July.
