Marine rescue volunteers from all across the north had a jam-packed weekend responding to both real and simulated emergencies as they gathered in the Whitsundays for their biggest training event of the year.
The simulations were part the annual Volunteer Marine Rescue Northern Zone joint search and rescue exercise, or SAREX, which involved VMR crews from across the region, as well as Whitsunday Water Police, SES, and the Queensland Ambulance Service.
But with many members of the public also out on the water enjoying the weekend’s fine weather, there were plenty of unplanned opportunities to put their rescue skills into practice too. ....

Highly Venomous Jellyfish Stings Leave Five People With Vomiting, Rashes

Easter weekend saw an unusual amount of jellyfish activity in Australia s Whitsunday Islands, leaving five people, including three children, hospitalized with stings.
The influx of incidents has prompted Whitsundays Volunteer Marine Rescue (VRM) service to stress the importance of wearing a protective suit while swimming in local waters.
The aquatic assailants are believed to be the highly venomous Irukandji jellyfish, a species so toxic that it even has a cluster of symptoms named after it: Irukandji syndrome. On average, Irukandji cause anywhere from 50 to 100 hospitalizations every year, according to Barrier Reef Australia. ....

Rain, hail or shine, Whitsunday Volunteer Marine Rescue crews are on call to lend a hand to boaties in need around the clock.
And 2020 was no exception with a record-breaking year for the 35-member strong squadron.
In the year to December 28, VMR Whitsunday was called to 162 marine incidents and helped more than 500 people.
This was an increase in activations of almost 30 per cent from 2019.
VMR Whitsunday president Mal Priday said the record-breaking year could have been a result of COVID travel restrictions.
“I think people are checking out their own backyard now because they can’t go overseas,” he said. ....
