A legacy continues; Daisy P. Swinton Scholarship now available for nursing students

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A new scholarship is available for nursing students in north Alabama, and its in honor of one trailblazing Huntsville nurse.
Daisy P. Swinton served Huntsville Hospital patients for 40 years, working her way from housekeeping to the hospital’s first ever African American ICU Nurse Manager. A new scholarship was just launched in her memory to encourage and empower future nursing students to follow in Daisy’s footsteps.

The scholarship was founded by Huntsville Hospital alongside her family. It’s funded by a community of generous donors who want to see Swinton’s legacy continue. ....

Top Tourism Town: CQ destinations in the running

Rockhampton and Yeppoon are in the running to be named Queensland’s Top Tourism Town.
It is one of two awards being presented by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council to recognise the state’s outstanding destinations.
Central Queensland is well represented, with Mount Morgan, Longreach and Winton finalists in the Small Tourism Town category.
There are 37 finalists from across the state in two categories - 15 in the Top Tourism Town Award (for a town/city with a population over 5000) and 22 in the Small Tourism Town Award (for a town with a population below 5000).
QTIC chief executive Daniel Gschwind said the awards showcased the great and diverse destinations in Queensland. ....

It s flattering, a bit humbling even, he said.
Mr Geiger said the festival would usually have international artists making the trek over, but because of COVID it was looking like a strong Australian line-up.
Despite playing and performing music his whole life, Mr Geiger said it was only recently he began writing original songs.
As time goes on and you re performing other people s songs you get a feel for it and you start making your own memories, Mr Geiger said.
Maybe as you get older and you get wiser, it becomes more authentic, he said.
Mr Geiger said he was excited to be able to focus solely on country music. ....

It s six months later and Lake Charles and surrounding areas are still trying to return after two devastating hurricanes in our area. One household name we lost in various locations in SWLA was Market Basket. While they are steadily working to make a triumphant return, Market Basket in Vinton is on the way back.
It was announced yesterday that Market Basket would be reopening one of their first damaged locations in Vinton today at 10:00am. For the Grand Opening, there will be refreshments and a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Stevenson s office.
This is exciting news for many in the Vinton area and abroad. We are still anticipating their locations here in Lake Charles, but they are worth the trip when you re looking for priced right groceries. They will still adhere to the CDC standards and want to invite you to come out for the Grand Opening or simply to relive that shopping experience with Market Basket. ....

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriffâs Office is investigating the theft of vehicle and welding equipment in Sulphur.
During the investigation, detectives learned that at approximately 12:40 a.m. on March 9, several suspects arrived at a local hotel on S. Cities Service Highway in Sulphur and stole a white GMC utility flatbed truck from the parking lot.
Surveillance video from the hotel reportedly showed a blue, four-door pickup truck pulling into the parking lot of the hotel that morning. Two suspects then exited the truck and stole the GMC. ....
