DVIDS - News - Commentary: Rethinking what we know about AAFES, military retail

7
FORT LEE, Va. (May 14, 2021) -– Some military community members were likely surprised by the recent DOD policy change that opened Army and Air Force Exchange Service shopping privileges to government civilians as of May 1. (Read more about it at army.mil/article/245809.)
Don’t presume, however, that the military retailer is in dire straits – necessitating the additional customer base to stay afloat. Truth is, the Exchange Service has nearly doubled its profitability since 2011, according to the latest figures available on its website. There is no indication exchanges will be supplanted anytime soon by the big box behemoths lurking beyond the gates. ....

Fort Bragg unit asks soldiers to submit ideas on suicide prevention

Those ideas are being implemented across the 18th Airborne Corps.
On May 25, Command officials will select the five most impactful ideas on suicide prevention to present before the “Dragon’s Lair” panel in May.
“Ideas to prevent soldier suicide problems live in the barracks, in our orderly rooms, in our motor pools, across our formations,” officials said.
Ideas should be submitted electronically on the 18th Airborne Corps’ Innovation website.

Two senators are pressing privatized housing companies for extensive details on their treatment of military families with disabled members who need accessible housing.
Some private companies that have partnered with the Defense Department “do not appear to be following federal laws that protect persons with disabilities,” according to letters sent Dec. 18 to top executives of six companies, signed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.
Citing the findings of a small online survey released in July by the nonprofit Military Housing Advocacy Network, the senators asked the executives for details about each of their military housing communities by Jan. 15. ....

Navy hires special education attorneys as part of pilot program for families

By ROSE L. THAYER | STARS AND STRIPES Published: December 16, 2020
AUSTIN, Texas The Navy has hired two special education lawyers as part of a three-year pilot program to expand support for service members enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program.
The two civilian attorneys, who have a background in special education law, began in November to assist families trying to get services for special needs children through federal laws put into practice differently in school districts across the country, said Lt. Cmdr. Nick Stampfli, legal assistance department head at the Legal Services Office for Mid-Atlantic Region. Navy families can find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to special education because frequent moves mean they are regularly entering new school districts with different rules and resources. ....
