Paterson NJ school budget for 2021-22 hikes taxes 12%


For the first time in several years, the district budget does not require any layoffs or program reductions. Officials said they were able to avoid cuts because of the extra federal funding the district received as a result of the COVID crisis.
The vote on the budget was 6-3 and all three board members who opposed it Vincent Arrington, Jonathan Hodges and Dania Martinez cited the tax increase as the reason for their decisions.
Hodges noted that the state Department of Education had created some of the district’s financial problems by rarely raising Paterson’s school property taxes during the three decades of state control of city schools. He said that left the Paterson board with little but to increase taxes once it regained local control. ....

Paterson NJ schools have 1,200 workers seeking COVID vaccine for now


PATERSON The first wave of 675 school district employees will be getting COVID-19 vaccines next week as city education officials remain undecided whether to resume in-person classes this academic year.
The district last week sent emails to all 3,909 employees letting them know about the availability of the voluntary vaccines for educators, said Superintendent Eileen Shafer. About 1,200 said they would get inoculations and the rest did not respond, she said.
Shafer said the 675 appointments were given out to those who were the quickest to respond to the email. She said the others would get appointments as additional doses become available through the district’s two medical partners in the initiative: St. Joseph’s University Medical Center and Hackensack Meridian Health. ....
