After graduating from the St. Paul’s School of Nursing and just days after passing his nursing boards Kenny A. Villatoro began vaccinating people against the virus. Here, he s shown working in Co-Op City in the Bronx.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Kenny A. Villatoro had seen the darkest side of the pandemic, so he jumped at the chance to head toward the light.
As a personal care aide, Villatoro saw first denial, then terror and hopelessness in the eyes of the patients he treated in the Critical Care COVID Unit of Staten Island University Hospital during the first agonizing months of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, all while he pursued his nursing degree. ....

BENNINGTON — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center has announced the most recent recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Patients nominate nurses, and a committee presents one award each month.
“This is an exceptional group of highly skilled and compassionate professionals,” said Pamela Duchene, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “The DAISY Award is a really special way for us to communicate our appreciation and our patients’ appreciation for their important work.”
An acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem, The DAISY Foundation of Glen Ellen, Calif., was formed in November 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33. The nursing care Patrick received when hospitalized profoundly touched his family. ....

This is an exceptional group of highly skilled and compassionate professionals, said Pamela Duchene, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. The DAISY Award is a really special way for us to communicate our appreciation and our patients appreciation for their important work.
