Climate change: A focus of Winchester City Council elections

Campaigners question parties on where they stand on climate change
EXTINCTION Rebellion Winchester have asked each of the main parties where they stand on local issues they regard as crucial for dealing with the climate crisis and that are within the city council’s control.
Phil Joyce from the group said: “Unless we take unprecedented action right now, we re heading for a world where we ll regularly see extreme flooding, devastating droughts and large-scale crop failures. May 6th is our chance to vote for politicians who will make climate change a priority.
The group asked each party to commit to the following measures: a new bus hub, phasing out inner-city centre parking, more walking and cycling measures, zero-carbon homes, support for renewable energy, objection to new roads and aviation, being carbon neutral by 2030 and lastly a citizens’ assembly to give residents a voice on climate change. ....

Winchester City Council responds to Barfield Close car park concerns

The cherry picker spotted by Ken Day
IT SEEMS that Winchester City Council is pressing on with a new multi-storey – despite objections from nearby residents.
Ken Day, who lives in Domum Road, has criticised civic chiefs over the car park plans for Barfield Close.
If the structure is completed it will stand at around 15-metres tall, with spaces for 287 vehicles on the former Vaultex site.
But Mr Day believes the council has missed out crucial steps in its planning process and has overlooked the opinions of the local community. He also thinks that groundworks have already begun.
No attempt has yet been made by Wincester City Council to respond to the particular objections lodged by Domum Road residents, who will be closest to the new multi-storey and most affected, said Mr Day. ....

Review of the Year – 2020 in Winchester | Hampshire Chronicle

Here is the second part of our Review of the Year:
JULY
A WINCHESTER woman has been crowned the winner of this year’s Great British Sewing Bee.
Clare Bradley beat stiff competition and impressed judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant to be awarded the title in the BBC One show.
Upon being announced as the winner, she said: “I feel really surprised. Crikey. I do hold myself to high standards and because other things I have gone in for are things I have trained for like exams and more exams - this was something I did for fun.”
The streets are bustling, the shops are filled – and for the first time in 13 weeks, Winchester’s pubs, cafes and restaurants are open, but not as we have known it. ....
