Canadian researchers lead development and testing of promising treatment for COVID-19 variants

“In this study, we report a novel and highly potent small-molecule drug called N-0385, that acts as the most effective entry inhibitor to date,” says Dr. François Jean, a project lead and professor in the department of microbiology and immunology at UBC. “We demonstrate that N-0385 is broadly protective against infection and mortality in mice, and believe N-0385 has potential as a viable early treatment option against emerging SARS-CoV-2 VOCs.”

Viable treatments for variants of concern (VOC) are urgently needed as they carry mutations in the virus spike protein that allow them to spread more easily, and cause more serious illness. VOCs may also be more resistant to antibodies produced by vaccines. ....

Community-based infection control measures were determined to have a far greater impact on the spread of Covid-19 than closing schools in a newly reported modeling study.
Researchers examined the association of school reopening or closing schools compared to other community-based infection control interventions on new and total Covid-19 cases in the decision analytical modeling analysis.
Based on the findings, they concluded that community-based interventions designed to reduce SARS-CoV-2 infectons such as restricting gatherings, limiting workplace exposures, and wearing face masks had a greater impact than closing schools when schools adopted aggressive infection control protocols. ....

Peginterferon-lambda shows strong antiviral action to accelerate clearance of COVID-19

TORONTO (February 5, 2021) - A clinical study led by Dr. Jordan Feld, a liver specialist at Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, University Health Network (UHN), showed an experimental antiviral drug can significantly speed up recovery for COVID-19 outpatients - patients who do not need to be hospitalized.
This could become an important intervention to treat infected patients and help curb community spread, while COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out this year.
This treatment has large therapeutic potential, especially at this moment as we see aggressive variants of the virus spreading around the globe which are less sensitive to both vaccines and treatment with antibodies, says Dr. Feld, who is also Co-Director of the Schwartz Reisman Liver Research Centre and the R. Phelan Chair in Translational Liver Research at UHN. ....

A chemistry professor at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and the imaging technique he co-invented, are part of an Ontario-wide research project that has received nearly $1-million over two years to study the long-term effects of COVID-19 on people s lungs.
