Non-lethal grey squirrel contraceptive aims to boost red survival rates

AS PART of British Science Week, The Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST) highlighted the vital role scientific research has in saving Britain’s endangered native red squirrels from extinction.
Approaching the fourth year of a five-year research project led by DEFRA’s Animal & Plant Health Agency, government scientists are on the cusp of creating a non-lethal grey squirrel oral contraceptive.
RSST spoke to Kathryn Fingland, researcher and lecturer in Animal Science at Nottingham Trent University, who leads a multi-year project in one of the last red squirrel urban strongholds, just outside Liverpool in Formby.
She said: “For me, the contraceptive will hopefully be a game-changer for long-term conservation efforts. ....
