Acrid smell from blaze at landfill site in Bury affecting people in Lancashire People across Lancashire are being told not to worry if they can smell something disgusting when they step outside their doors. Fire crews battling a blaze in Bury, which Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have declared as a major incident, have told residents in Chorley and South Ribble that the ongoing incident is causing an acrid smell to spread across the county. The smell is being caused by the smoke, which is being carried by wind.
