Bolton Arnhem war hero given special gift from the Netherlands

A VETERAN who took part in one of the bloodiest battles in the Second World War has received a special gift from the Netherlands.
Wilf Oldham, aged 100, who lives in Radcliffe, fought in the battle of Arnhem,as part of the 1st Battalion, The Border Regiment.
Chairman of the Bolton-branch of the Parachute Regimental Association, David Sharkey, had set up a fundraising campaign to get Mr Oldham back to Arnhem but this won t be possible this year due to the pandemic.
As an alternative to a visit, Mr Oldham has been presented with a book about the battle, along with a letter written by a student in Arnhem and a pack of seeds. ....

Mayor of Bolton reopens veteran's cafe with poignant mural

The Mayor of Bolton along with an MP and a 100-year-old war veteran have officially reopened a cafe providing support for veterans in the town centre.
The Para Cafe, in Thynne Street, has reopened its outdoor area in line with recent lockdown easing, unveiling a poignant new mural commemorating a Bolton war hero.
The mural is in memory of late paratrooper Albert Campbell, the grandad of co-owner Lauren Cole, and depicts World War II’s Operation Market Garden, one of the deadliest battles of the war.
The striking image has been recreated by artist Kazer Graff, who also painted the mural on Sweet Green Tavern. ....

Bolton war hero Wilf Oldham's bid to return to deadly battleground

HE can still see the faces of the fallen soldiers he served with during the deadly Battle of Arnhem.
Wilf Oldham, who served with 1st Battalion Border Regiment (Airborne), was one of the few who escaped at the end of the 1944 battle, which is depicted in Richard Attenborough s epic war film, A Bridge Too Far.
Now 100-years-old, Mr Oldham hopes to return this September with the help of the town.
