For his first Memorial Day as commander-in-chief, President Joe Biden carried on with a decades-long tradition and attended a service at War Memorial Plaza in New Castle to honor troops who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
No stranger to loss, Biden tried to comfort families during the memorial service, acknowledging “the moment that we celebrate it is the toughest day of the year.”
The president’s son, Beau Biden, Delaware’s former attorney general, was a major in the Army National Guard and served in Iraq. He died of brain cancer on May 30, 2015, six years ago Sunday. ....

'Dear Abby' letter during Vietnam War changed mail call for lonely soldiers

While serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, William David Rice – mostly known as David – noticed so many of his fellow soldiers had not received a single piece of mail.
He wanted to change that.
So Rice wrote a letter in August 1967 to Pauline Phillips’ nationally syndicated column asking readers to write to lonely soldiers.
His letter said, “Dear Abby: For Christmas I’d like to see some smiles on the faces of lots of my buddies over here. They don’t get any mail. If any of your readers (from 15 to 80) have a 5-cent stamp and time on their hands, please have them write to ‘Any Lonely Soldier’ in care of me and I’ll see that he gets it. Thanks a million, Abby.” ....

Women veterans virtual healthcare summit set April 8

The Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Center will hold a virtual summit aimed at women’s healthcare and resources available in VA from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 8.
The VA recognizes that women are the fastest-growing group in the veteran population and will have VA medical professionals on hand to discuss available women’s healthcare at the VA. The virtual summit will cover women’s health, OB/GYN services, mental health resources, to include military sexual trauma, and how to enroll in VA healthcare. The event is focused on female veterans but is open to the community and other healthcare professionals who support female veterans. ....
