Ioway Creek: Decades before name change, a Native teen led the cause in Ames

Ames Tribune
Editor s note: This story has been updated to remove an incorrect description of the gender make-up of the Ames City Council in 1994; to reflect the lack of clarity on whether Stubben had the chance to speak before that council; and to clarify that a packet of paperwork on the name change was required by a federal governmental organization.
Nearly three decades ago, 16-year-old Fawn Stubben prepared to stand before the Ames City Council to talk about what she said was the real meaning behind a local creek s name: Female genitalia.
But that conversation never happened.
Stubben, whose mother is from the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe and father is from the Ponca tribe, wanted to explain why the name of Ames Squaw Creek needed to change. ....

For more than 42 years Trussville attorney, William Bright, has had a passion for law and advocacy. Why is there a Yukon, Oklahoma?

About 4,000 kilometres south of Whitehorse, over the Rockies and not far from Dallas, Texas, there’s another Yukon.
It’s the hometown of country music superstar Garth Brooks, and the Czech Capital of Oklahoma (named for the wave of immigrants who arrived following World War I). It’s a bedroom community of Oklahoma City and the place where, in 1949, a cow named Grady attracted national media attention after getting stuck in a silo for four days.
But why is it named after
the Yukon? The answer to that question seems to be a bit of a mystery.
The prevailing theory is that town founder A. N. Spencer named it in honour of the Klondike Gold Rush. Presumably, this 69-square kilometre stretch of land in the south-central United States would also be a land of riches, like its northern namesake.  ....
