Williamstown Sees Unusually High Turnout in Local Election

On Wednesday morning, Town Clerk Nicole Pedercini announced that the total turnout for the local election was 1,823, or 38 percent of the town s registered voters.

That is modest compared to the 3,600 local ballots cast in last fall s presidential election, but it swamps participation numbers for a typical spring vote.

We ve talked about how some of the loudest voices have been sort of controlling the narrative, newly elected Select Board member Jeffrey Johnson said Tuesday night. I think the votes now control the narrative.

Johnson s contest against Anthony Boskovich and a second Select Board race that saw Wade Hasty defeat Albert Cummings likely were major contributors to the big turnout numbers. ....

Williamstown Finance Committee Drills Down on Mount Greylock Budget

Mount Greylock Superintendent Jason McCandless and Business Administrator Joe Bergeron on Wednesday presented the regional district s $25.6 million fiscal 2022 spending plan to the town body for review.

Although the budget includes an approximate 4.6 percent increase in the operating budget for the PreK-12 district, the district is seeking increases of just 1.9 percent and 2.0 percent in the assessments to member towns Williamstown and Lanesborough, respectively.

The rest of the increase is being covered by grants, including pandemic-relief grants, and drawdowns on the district s three reserve accounts: School Choice, tuition and excess and deficiency.

Finance Committee member Melissa Cragg spent several minutes questioning Bergeron about the long-term implications for local property taxpayers of the programmatic changes in the FY22 budget. ....

Mount Greylock School Committee Hears from Public on Turf Question

On Tuesday evening, they have another chance to decide whether to move forward or again press the pause button.

The committee is scheduled to take a vote on a $44,000 proposal from architect Perkins Eastman to draw up bid documents for a renovation of the school s playing fields that includes a multi-sport synthetic turf field.

Without the updated documents, the district cannot put the project projected to cost north of $2 million out to bid. Committing to the $44,000 expense now makes it a near certainty that it ultimately will reissue the request for proposals.

It would be the second time in a year and a half that the district would be soliciting bids for the project. The first round came in well over the projected cost of the project and were rejected in September 2019. ....

McCandless: District, Union Working to Improve COVID-19 Agreement

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. Mount Greylock Regional School District officials are working to tweak a memorandum of understanding with the teachers union that allowed the opening of school in September, but it is too soon to say whether those talks will lead to a resumption of in-person instruction.

Last week, Mount Greylock went to fully remote learning all three of its schools after the county s 14-day COVID-19 test positivity rate reached 3.01 percent, just north of the 3 percent threshold for remote learning in the September MOA.

Superintendent Jason McCandless on Tuesday told the School Committee that he is not overly optimistic that metric will decline when the state Department of Public Health releases new numbers on Thursday evening. ....
