We’d like to send along a couple of Sun-Gazette shout-outs today to two people whose names now appear on local buildings and for good reason.
Larry A. Ward graduated in 1966 from the former Williamsport Technical Institute, which later became the Williamsport Area Community College and is now Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Decades after his graduation, a newly revamped building on campus bears his name the Larry A. Ward Machining Technologies Center.
That followed his gift of $1 million to the college the largest alumni gift in the school’s history.
It was a bit of appreciation for the school that gave him all of the tools he needed for success as an engineer, manufacturing designer and business owner. ....

Larry A. Ward, responsible for the largest alumni gift in Pennsylvania College of Technology history, speaks during the April 27 dedication of the advanced manufacturing facility named in his honor. Ward donated more than $1 million to upgrade the instructional space at his alma mater, explaining, “I knew from my experience that Penn College students were hands-on and loved figuring out how to make things work better.”

Penn College holds dedication ceremony for remodeled facility | News, Sports, Jobs

Larry Ward stood before a gathering of Pennsylvania College of Technology administrators, faculty and students, community leaders, and member of his family, on a sun-splashed spring afternoon on the grounds of the campus to remind everyone that manufacturing is alive and well in America.
Behind him stood the Larry A. Ward Machining Technologies Center, a newly revamped facility thanks to a donation of over $1 million, the largest alumni gift in the school’s history.
Ward, a 1966 graduate, made it clear that it was the college he returned to Tuesday that helped mold him.
“Penn College is what America needs to bring manufacturing back to America,” he said. ....

Floyd “Hank” Lewis Hartman died Jan. 24, 2021 at the Embassy of Loyalsock where he had been a resident. Born in Williamsport, he was the son of Raymond and Bertha Hartman. Floyd was active in the Boy Scouts in his youth and did odd jobs in his neighborhood.
At the age of 19 he left school to serve his country in the Korean War. In the Army, he rose to the rank of sergeant and served in the 3rd Infantry Division 7th Regiment 1st Battalion.
Sergeant Hartman was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in battle as well as the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal w/3 BSS, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and a Distinguished Unit Citation. ....

Martin W. Grieco
Martin W. Grieco, 99, of State College, was an accomplished architect, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed away at home on Jan. 11, 2021.
Mr. Grieco was born in Lock Haven, the youngest of seven children, to Vito Anthony and Catherine Byrne Grieco.
He graduated in 1939 from Lock Haven High School and immediately joined the U.S. Army. After training at Camp Shelby, Miss. and Camp Sutton, N.C., Martin and other troops sailed on the Queen Elizabeth ship to Scotland. He served as a corporal in the First Battalion, 190th Field Artillery. His tour of duty spanned England, France, Germany, and Central Europe. Campaigns included D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He completed his military service in 1945. ....
