UVic booklet outlines racist history as B.C.'s 150th year approaches


The 80-page document is being made available as B.C. approaches its 150th anniversary of joining Canada this July 20.
“In 1871, this province joined the Canadian federation and, ever since, communities of Indigenous, Black, and other racialized peoples have waged protracted struggles against the dispossession of Indigenous lands, institutionalized discrimination, and the politics of exclusion,” the report begins. “They have won many victories, yet, 150 years later, we are witnessing yet another uprising against systemic racism.”
The booklet was written by a group of academics and activists from diverse communities, who link historical events to recent anti-racism movements around Black Lives Matter, the Wet’suwet’en blockades and more. ....

Only 15 Egyptian vultures were spotted against 28 during the same period last year between December 2020 and January 2021.
INDORE: The population of Egyptian vultures the only species seen in Madhya Pradesh s Indore and surrounding areas has witnessed a sharp decline in the last few years.
The population of these vultures has decreased from nearly 83 to just 15 during the last four years, claims a survey conducted by Indore-based Nature and Wildlife Conservation and Awareness Society.
Presence of feral dogs at the trenching grounds also prevents movement of vultures in the area.
Only 15 Egyptian vultures were spotted against 28 during the same period last year between December 2020 and January 2021. ....

Thailand, the sole Asian country to legalise cannabis for medical use, is so keen on educating locals about the drug’s benefits that tourism and sports minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn this month unveiled a medical marijuana tour that will cover eight provinces, set to kick off next year. But not too far away, in Singapore, top officials are singing a starkly different tune.
Law and home affairs minister K. Shanmugam has in recent weeks taken to social media on multiple occasions to stress the island nation’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs – marijuana included. Earlier this month, he told local media Singapore had to “hold the line” on the issue and needed to persuade the international community “based on rationality and science”. ....
