South African Ex-President Zuma Jailed After Contempt Conviction S thembile Cele and Paul Vecchiatto, Bloomberg News (Bloomberg) Former South African President Jacob Zuma, who was convicted on contempt-of-court charges last week, spent the night in prison after after he failed in a last-ditch bid to delay serving his 15-month sentence. Confirmation of Zumaâs detention came shortly after the expiry of a Constitutional Court deadline that he be jailed by midnight on Wednesday. Heâs being held at a newly built prison in Estcourt, about 147 kilometers (92 miles) northwest of the port city of Durban. The conditions of Zumaâs incarceration will be determined once an assessment has been completed, the Department of Correctional Services said in a statement on Thursday. Police spokesman Vish Naidoo earlier revealed that heâd been taken into custody. ....
