Ron Hain - the sheriff of Kane County in neighboring Illinois - said of the tens of millions of gun-owning households in the U.S, fewer than half store their guns securely.
Startups in recent years have brought some potentially promising products to market - such as different kinds of personalized locks. Hain said these are being tested by law enforcement officers and firearms experts.

The shootings at a Kenosha County tavern last weekend, that left three people dead and three wounded, are prompting more demands for what a coalition calls common sense gun violence prevention.
The 80% Coalition held a rally Wednesday near The Somers House, the tavern is near Carthage College where the shooting occurred. The coalition is made up of religious groups and those representing doctors, mental health advocates, as well as Black and Latino organizations.

There s a renewed push for gun-control measures in Wisconsin and at the federal level, with President Joe Biden s executive actions this week.
Advocates of the plans say longstanding opposition remains, but the focus on different aspects of the gun debate might receive greater support.
Biden s announcement follows several mass shootings in the U.S. His executive orders range from restrictions on homemade firearms known as ghost guns, to investments in community violence-intervention programs.
Jeri Bonavia, executive director of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, noted that Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has a similar funding proposal, which she believes can work. ....
