Fact check: COVID-19 deaths have occurred in developing countries and among the U.S. homeless

Social media users have been sharing posts which seek to undermine the global COVID-19 pandemic by claiming that “3rd world countries” have “basically no deaths” due to COVID-19 and that there have been no deaths among homeless people in America. This claim is untrue: although the health impact of COVID-19 on the least developed countries has thus far been less severe than initially expected, there have been COVID-19 deaths recorded in developing countries as well as among the homeless population in the United States.

The posts (here   ,  here  ,  here) show a screenshot of a tweet from July 9, 2020 (here), which says, “IF this was actually a deadly GLOBAL pandemic bodies would be PILING UP in 3rd world countries that can’t socially distance & have no sanitation. But there are basically NO deaths occurring there. NOBODY in the media is even curious about this. That’s all I need to know.” ....

A woman’s makeshift home at a bus shelter in Central, Gqeberha, has caused endless issues for frustrated residents now living as her neighbours.
For almost two months the woman, thought to be in her 30s, has been coming “home” to the bus stop on the corner of Western Road and Deare Street, where she has set up a bed-like structure and decorated her makeshift home with items collected from rubbish bins. ....

Community, restaurants to provide meals for the homeless in Rochester

A group of volunteers in Rochester have been partnering weekly with local restaurants to provide the homeless with warm meals. Every Wednesday, behind the United Methodist Church in Rochester, the community has been coming together to care for the homeless. From boots to groceries and a warm meal from a local restaurant, the initiative Manna Meals for the Hungry has been helping those less fortunate. Cheryl Huckins put together the initiative when the pandemic began. Each week she partners with a rotating list of Rochester restaurants that those in the community can call to buy meals for the homeless, ranging from $5 to $7. Then, she picks up the meals and brings them to the church. “I’m very grateful for the Rochester people,” Huckins said. “I cannot believe the love that’s in this community and we work by the grace of God and we’re doing this work here on Earth.”This week, Mitchell Hill BBQ was able to provide 55 “Manna Meals” for those in need.“We try t ....

J&J COVID-19 Vaccine Is Here. Now Come the Questions

email article
Now that Johnson & Johnson has joined Pfizer and Moderna in having a COVID-19 vaccine authorized in the U.S., the question on many people s minds is: who gets which vaccine?
Much of the discussion has focused on the differing vaccine efficacy numbers for the three products: those given for the J&J vaccine are in the 70% range, versus more than 90% for Pfizer s and Moderna s.
But the Biden administration and independent public health specialists insist that those figures aren t strictly comparable and the public shouldn t pay much attention to them.
Johnson & Johnson s is not an inferior vaccine, and we should not talk about who shouldn t get it; we should talk about how we can immunize hard-to-get populations, said Sarah Long, MD, a pediatric diseases physician at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and a member of the CDC s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), during an emergency meeting of the committee Mond ....
