Home-based workers are not covered well by the existing social assistance schemes targeted at the poorest
Home-based workers are a significant part of our economy. They are engaged in many sectors and are integrated into both domestic and global supply chains. The Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the lives and livelihoods of informal workers across South Asia. Organisations of HBWs in the region have been constantly monitoring the situation for their members through their grassroots leaders since March 2020.
Thirteen organisations from 12 locations, including HomeNet South Asia (HNSA) in seven countries in the region, participated in the study to evaluate what women HBWs are experiencing during the Covid-19 crisis and released the study titled, ....

Trade union and labour leaders on Friday demanded of the federal government to pay an unemployment allowance to all workers who had lost their jobs during the coronavirus and to universalise social security by making changes in the constitution.
Addressing a joint press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Karamat Ali from the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, Habib-ud-Din Junaidi from the People’s Labour Bureau, Nasir Mansoor of the National Trade Union Federation, Farhat Parveen from the NOW Communities, Zahra Khan from the Home-Based Women Workers Federation, and Jannat Hussain from the Pakistan Trade Unions Defence Campaign pointed out that the workers have been hit hard due to the Covid-19 pandemic and they were not receiving any support from the government. ....

KARACHI: “Laws are made to be implemented, not to be stored inside cupboards,” said Habibuddin Junaidi, president, Peoples Labour Bureau, Sindh. He was speaking at a joint press conference on labour issues called by labour activists and trade union leaders in connection with May Day at the Karachi Press Club on Friday.
“The PPP government has passed some very fine labour-friendly laws such as the Sindh Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Sindh Home-Based Workers Act, the Sindh Covid-19 Emergency Relief Ordinance, etc, but non-implementation of these laws is [a matter of concern], especially in the private sector,” he said. ....

KARACHI: Victoria, an elderly woman with five children, four of whom are daughters and married, hails from Umer Brohi Goth near the Northern Bypass. Since her house is far from her employer’s and the public transport route does not include a convenient drop-off point for her, she is forced to live with her son and manages to visit home only on the weekends.
She works as a caretaker for elderly patients in different homes in Karachi. She wakes up at 3am, offers her prayers, has her breakfast and leaves for work as early as 5am, getting back by 9pm. “This is my daily routine. Only if the government provides a decent transport facility for women, I can go home daily,” she says politely. ....
