Utah schools discuss on-campus representation of Indigenous peoples

Discussions about inclusivity on Utah campuses continue after a resolution urging Utah schools to retire Native American mascots failed in the recent Utah legislative session.
The resolution, HCR3, would have encouraged K-12 public schools to retire their Native American mascots. It failed to pass the House on Feb. 16 after Utah lawmakers spoke against it. HCR3 would not have been binding law, but a statement of encouragement to promote inclusivity and sensitivity toward native students. ....

Last week, we got a long-awaited audit into the state’s controversial and ultimately aborted contract with Banjo, a company that touted its ability to gobble up vast amounts of public and state-held data on all of us and use it to fight crime.
Auditors found the Big Brother tech didn’t follow industry best practices and shouldn’t have been allowed access to our personal information. That’s the bad news. ....

Utah lawmaker's pandemic 'endgame' bill passes the House. Would eliminate statewide mask mandates.

A Utah House lawmaker on Wednesday unveiled what he hopes is a compromise version of a pandemic “endgame” bill that would roll back the state’s general mask mandate while leaving in place face covering requirements for K-12 schools and large, crowded gatherings.
The legislation cleared the House by a 51-20 vote, over opposition from House Democrats who called it government overreach and a handful of Republicans who thought it should’ve eliminated all mask mandates immediately.
Rep. Paul Ray, the bill’s sponsor, said the latest version of his HB294 doesn’t completely satisfy him but he suggested that it’s a proposal Gov. Spencer Cox and the state health department could stomach. ....
