Man who fatally stabbed Army vet on Appalachian Trail found not guilty by reason of insanity

A man who terrorized a group of hikers on the Appalachian Trail in Southwest Virginia in 2019, stabbing two people, one of them fatally, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a psychiatric hospital until he is no longer a danger to society.
James L. Jordan, 32, admitted that he fatally stabbed Ronald S. Sanchez Jr., 43, a 16-year Army veteran who spent three tours in Iraq as a combat engineer. Sanchez was attempting to hike the entire 2,192 mile length of the Appalachian Trail, and had set up camp in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest with three other people he met on the trail early on May 11, 2019. Jordan, known to trail hikers because of his erratic behavior, set up a campsite nearby, but acted increasingly disturbed and unstable, court records state, so Sanchez and the other three decided to pack up and leave. ....

Royal Commission Into Veteran Suicide ‘Supremely Important’: RSL
The Returned and Services League (RSL) has welcomed the Australian government’s announcement of a royal commission into veteran suicide rates, saying it was supremely important and a matter of urgency.
RSL National President Major General Greg Melick said the organisation looked forward to providing input, advice, and support to the federal government on this issue.
“The issue of veterans’ mental health and veteran suicide is supremely important and must be addressed as a matter of urgency; the RSL is calling for immediate action with no further delay,” Melick said.
“The RSL and its veteran members will continue to provide support to find solutions that deal with the scourge of veterans’ suicide which impacts severely on the entire veteran community.” ....

But 12 of the Gauteng medical personnel did not deploy and on Monday July 6 found themselves in front of a military judge.
Advocate Brian Plaatjies, a former military judge, represented 10 of the 12. The two other accused were represented by free military counsel.
Plaatjies said he was instructed to pursue damages against the military for legal expenses and for pain and suffering.
“For nine months they were the subject of banter. The whole thing cost them greatly and I don t come cheap . The point here is that the military should not be using social media to communicate because it opens them up to to being hacked or exploited by outside influences. ....

Last Saturday 12 veterans marched from Ōrākau Memorial near Kihikihi to the Returned Servicemen s Association in Te Awamutu to raise money for the Te Awamutu Poppy Appeal Trust.
The walk totaled approximately 10 kilometers and took them two and a half hours to complete. ....
