Soldiers’ Home bill gets hearing 2 weeks before deadline

The deadly COVID-19 outbreak that swept through the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home last year underscored the need to reconstruct the long-term care facility with modern improvements, state officials and community members said Tuesday.
With federal funds at stake, Gov. Charlie Baker is pushing the Legislature to pass a bill (H 64) by April 1 authorizing $400 million for construction of a new veterans’ home in Holyoke, and the project faces an even greater spotlight amid the pandemic.
Secretary of Veterans’ Services Cheryl Poppe told lawmakers that the public health emergency brought new attention to HVAC and airflow issues in the facility. It also prompted additional interest in a “small home” concept with a majority of private rooms, a change Poppe said could not be ac ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Columbia VA Health Care System has announced it will be opening its COVID-19 vaccination clinic to veterans of all ages.
All veterans who are currently enrolled to receive VA health care are eligible to receive the vaccine.
Vaccines will be provided at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center. Vaccines will also be offered at community-based outpatient clinics in Greenville, Florence, Orangeburg, and Sumter. ....

The Government is launching a $15 million competitive grant round to kick start Australian clinical trials exploring the use of potential breakthrough combination therapies for the treatment of debilitating mental illnesses.
It is estimated four million Australians experience a mental health disorder ever year, and almost half of all Australians will be affected at some point in their lifetime. The most prevalent mental illnesses are anxiety disorders – affecting more than 14 per cent of adults each year – depression and substance abuse disorders. Evidence also suggests that up to 12 per cent of Australians experience PTSD during their lifetime ....

Russian lawmakers on Wednesday passed a bill that bans insults against World War II veterans, with offenders facing possible sentences of up to five years in jail. 
The move came after a judge last month ruled that jailed opposition politician Alexei Navalny was guilty of defaming a World War II veteran who was among a group of Russians President Vladimir Putin s top domestic critic called traitors for appearing in a pro-Kremlin video.
