5 Maine educational institutions dubbed "military friendly"

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Five Maine educational institutions are being designated as “Military Friendly Schools.”
The University of Maine at Augusta, Husson University and Maine Maritime Academy earned the designation along with Central Maine Community College and Southern Maine Community College.
All told, more than 700 colleges and universities across the country were recognized.
The University of Maine at Augusta’s dedication to veterans and military service members dates back to the end of the Vietnam War, when soldiers were returning home from the battlefield, President Rebecca Wyke said.

“Someone on the staff placed a sign out front that said ‘welcome veterans,’” Wyke told News Center Maine. “One Vietnam-era veteran remarked ’this is the only welcome I have received.” ....

SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) - Salisbury VA Health Care System will begin COVID-19 vaccinations with the Janssen vaccine Monday, March 8, following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization for this vaccine.
In clinical trials, the Janssen vaccine showed greater than 85% efficacy in preventing severe/critical COVID-19 disease requiring hospitalization, occurring at least 28 days after vaccination and demonstrated nearly 100% efficacy in preventing death.
The Janssen vaccine will be offered to patients at the Kernersville Health Care Center and Charlotte Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. ....

Cougar type helicopter crashes in Tatvan district of eastern Bitlis province, says National Defense Ministry.
At least 11 Turkish soldiers, including a senior officer, were martyred and two others injured as a military helicopter crashed in eastern Turkey on Thursday, the National Defense Ministry said.
The number of our martyrs has increased to 11. We wish Allah s mercy upon our martyrs and extend our condolences to their precious families, the ministry said on Twitter.
In an earlier statement, the ministry said 10 soldiers lost their lives and three soldiers were injured in the crash in Bitlis province. ....

State, military funerals held for 11 soldiers martyred in helicopter crash.
The 11 Turkish soldiers martyred by a helicopter crash were honored by state and military funeral services on Friday.
Besides the martyred soldiers, including one corps commander, two other soldiers were injured when a military helicopter crashed in the eastern Bitlis province on Thursday.
Contact with the Cougar type military helicopter, which took off from Bingol for Tatvan district of Bitlis at 1.55 p.m. local time (1055GMT), was lost at 2.25 p.m. (1125GMT).

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Tribune News Service) When staff from the Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System weighed how best to deliver the Covid-19 vaccine to eligible veterans, they worried bringing them into the Buffalo VA Medical Center for appointments presented a potential safety risk.
So officials got creative, setting up a dedicated vaccination clinic in a large, climate-controlled tent in the parking lot outside the main hospital. Local VA leaders say it s the first clinic of its kind within the national VA health system and it s the reason the local VA health network has provided initial vaccine doses to more than 14,000 veterans, most over the last six ....
