Feb 18, 2021 Weirton officials on Feb. 8 presented a plaque to the family of Edward Frankovitch, in memory of the former city chief of police, who died Dec. 22. Frankovitch began his career in law enforcement with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, and was a founding member and former president of the West Virginia Chiefs of Police Association. He also spent 40 years in the safety department of Weirton Steel Corp. and was active in numerous local civic organizations. Contributed ....

Peter Paul was born in Steubenville, OH, on August 21, 1946, to Peter Paul and Rose Torchio Altomare, Sr. Paul grew up in Weirton and graduated from Weirton Madonna High School in 1964, where he was a member of the OVAC Champion football team coached by Joe Krivak. Paul served as a Sargent in the United States Army in the First Signal Group in Vietnam. Returning to Weirton, Paul had a 30-year career with Weirton Steel, where he worked in the tin mill and was a union steward for 15 years. In the early 80’s Paul and his friends Pat and Bill opened up Pat’s Place, a popular nightspot in Weirton. ....

He was born October 23, 1944 in Steubenville, the son of the late John D. Hughes and Illeen (Snyder) Hughes. Gary was a member of the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church of Toronto; was a 1963 graduate of Toronto High School; was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a big Ohio State and Cleveland Brown’s fan and loved being with his grandchildren every chance he had including at their sporting events. He loved hanging out with the guys at Tim Starr’s service station. ....

Feb 15, 2021 Daryl V. “Sid” Toothman, 85, of Steubenville, OH, passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family. Sid was born Oct. 12, 1935, in Farmington, WV, son of the late Daryl W. and Phyllis (Atkinson) Toothman. Sid worked in the Tin Mill Electrical Shop at Weirton Steel and retired with 40 years of service. He was a graduate of Steubenville High School and he loved Big Red Football and was a long-time season ticket holder. His memberships included the Bell Chapel UMC, the Men’s Club of the Church and the Big Red Boosters. Sid was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, Tenth Div. and he loved spending time at Leesville Lake. ....
