A year after state pandemic emergency declaration, health officials are focused on what's ahead

CHARLESTON, W.Va. The past year in the coronavirus pandemic has been a year of constant evolution for health department across West Virginia.
“In the beginning, it was monitoring, then we were doing surveillance and then testing and then we moved to vaccination,” said Howard Gamble, administrator for the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department.

“I think every time we moved to a different phase we looked back and said, ‘How has this gone? How did we make improvements? How can we make improvements? ”
Tuesday marked one year since Governor Jim Justice declared a State of Emergency for all 55 West Virginia counties because of the pandemic. ....

Death care workers on front lines want COVID vaccine | News, Sports, Jobs

MARTINS FERRY Ohio’s funeral workers are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic and want to get vaccinated now like any other first responder or nurse who has direct contact with people infected with the virus.
Chase Milburn, a funeral director and embalmer with Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home of Barnesville, said he has reached out to local and state legislators and Gov. Mike DeWine’s office about the issue, but no action has been taken to help the state’s 3,000 death care workers.
“We aren’t being included in the vaccine phases because their priority is the elderly and opening the schools, both of which I strongly agree with being priorities. However, I feel as though we should have been considered with first responders and healthcare workers so that we could continue working safely. We have contact with COVID-19 in the forms of deceased individuals, families we are meeting with, along with guests attending funerals,” ....

More COVID cases at Salvation Army homeless shelter | News, Sports, Jobs

BELLAIRE The Salvation Army of Belmont County is continuing to battle the coronavirus at its homeless shelter.
The army on its Facebook page updated the community on its situation, noting the three residents who initially had been sickened with COVID-19 “are no longer contagious.” However, now the virus has spread to others there.
“With that said we unfortunately have eight new cases in our shelter. All non-shelter social services will continue … The shelter will remain locked down as long as we have active cases. We will try and start all worship and church programming in two weeks. Once again it is our goal to stop the spread and keep everyone safe,” the army noted. ....

Wheeling residents Irene “Renee” and John Anderson have been married since 1949 and had experienced few days apart until the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
WHEELING John and Irene “Renee” Anderson of Wheeling are living their wedding vows even more devoutly today as they did when they pledged to one another more than 70 years ago. Add in COVID-19 and “for better and for worse” became “for worse and for a little less worse.”
Renee, 91, has been a resident of the Home of Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling for just over a year. John, 93, lives in the Braddock Apartments located within the nursing home facility so he can remain close to his beloved spouse. ....
