Trumpeter Rob Mazurek May Have Made Marfa's Great Cosmic Jazz Album – Texas Monthly

In 2019 a few years after relocating to Marfa from Chicago the now 55-year-old trumpeter, composer, and visual artist Rob Mazurek found himself performing in one of the most surreal venues of his life: at the bottom of the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. Barefoot in the mud at low tide, he started to play, imagining “a scenario of projecting sonic energy on the border line … improvising on this feeling,” he recounts over Zoom from his music studio in Marfa, where he’s bundled in a black Garza Marfa hoodie. The experience spurred him to consider how the U.S.-Mexico border the site of so much human suffering and political turmoil is ultimately a construct. ....

It’s going to be a weird holiday, this much we know. While I usually find myself searching for the most festive attire this time of year, I can’t seem to summon the urge to wear anything without a stretchy waistband. And that’s OK I snagged a great sweatsuit that will look just lovely with a bit of jewelry and maybe a hair accessory.
As I yearn for things to be comfortable this holiday season, I’ve found myself reflecting on Christmases of the past: what I wore, what I ate, the top holiday song of that year (though is it ever by anyone other than Mariah Carey?). It seems weird to focus on things like clothing and jewelry, but attire has always been a massive hallmark of the holidays for me. ....
