The national athletes’ mission in Tokyo is clear – end the country’s long wait for a gold medal in the Olympics.
TOKYO: With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics finally upon us after almost a year-long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the time has come for our 30 athletes to stand up and be counted.
After more than four years of sweat, tears and sacrifices, the 30 of them will go up against arguably the world’s best in their respective events in their quest to meet the three-medal target, including a first-ever gold, set by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today congratulated national diving queen Pandelela Rinong for winning the gold medal in the women's individual 10 meter (m) platform event at the 2021 FINA World Cup diving tournament in Japan, yesterday.
In his speech, which was uploaded on his official Facebook page, Muhyiddin said Pandelela's hard work and commitment had ensured the Jalur Gemilang to continue to fly on the world stage.
"Congratulations! Malaysia is proud of you," he said.
The 28 -year -old athlete displayed an energetic and convincing dive to top the final which took place at the Tokyo Aquatic Center, Japan, by collecting 355.70 points after completing seven dives.

KUALA LUMPUR : The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today congratulated national diver Pandelela Rinong on winning the gold in the women’s individual 10 metre platform event at the 2021 FINA World Cup diving tournament in Japan, yesterday.
His Majesty also expressed his happiness and pride for her success in winning the first gold for the national squad at the tournament, thus making a new history for the national diving sport and making Malaysia famous on the world stage.
“His Majesty regards Pandelela’s achievement as a very meaningful success for Malaysia and also as an inspiration for her to continue to win the gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games this July,“ as stated in a statement which was posted on Istana Negara Instagram today.

KUALA LUMPUR: National diver Pandelela Rinong splashed her way to the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform at the FINA Diving World Cup 2021 on Wednesday.
Pandelela amassed 355.70 points to win the final at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre in Japan.
The 28-year-old Sarawakian became the only athlete to contribute a medal to the Malaysian contingent in the five-day tournament, which will end tomorrow.
Matsuri Arai of Japan won the silver after garnering 342.00 points while Canada’s Caeli Mckay took home the bronze medal with 338.55 points.
