Diving Her Way Into Malaysian Hearts - Celebrating Leong Mun Yee

In the beginning
Born and bred in Ipoh, Mun Yee attended the Marian Convent Primary Girls School there before moving to the Bukit Jalil Sports School in Kuala Lumpur when she was 11.
Albeit famously known as a diver, Mun Yee started as a swimmer and it wasn’t till her parents brought her to diving try-outs at the age of 10 that she got the passion for diving.
Three years later at the ripe age of 13, she made her debut at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
The rest you could say is

TOKYO: “We have done our very best, perhaps luck deserted us this time for a medal. We have no regrets,” national diving queen Pandelela Rinong said after the women’s 10-metre synchronised platform event at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday.
Pandelela, 28, said everything went smoothly during the warm-up session at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre, but during the actual event with Leong Mun Yee, each of them made a mistake which eventually proved costly.
“We went into action without any pressure as we are used to such conditions… but during the dive, it just went wrong slightly,” said the Sarawak-born diver.

National athlete Pandelela Rinong was recently put on the spot after Sarawak’s State Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that she shouldn’t be awarded a Datukship because ‘too much rewards will spoil atheles’.
This is a rather baffling statement considering our other great national athletes like Datuk Nicol David and Datuk Lee Chong Wei were granted their titles at the age of 24 and 25 respectively. For comparison’s sake, Pandelela Rinong is currently aged 28.
Yet she won her first international gold medal at the age of 14

Hindsight 2020: The year all the stadium lights went out

In Hindsight 2020, we look at how Covid-19 has rendered this a dystopian year.
One by one, the lights started going out of sports from March. Since then, it was mostly sorrow and tears for athletes and sports enthusiasts around the world.
It was supposed to have been a great year, with the Olympic Games expected to hog the limelight in Tokyo and Euro 2020 to spark across 12 European cities, promising football fans some high-octane action.
Instead, both fell to that mighty yet miniscule conqueror called the coronavirus.
Other big events became victims too, like the Premier League, Formula One, the world championships of various other sports, tennis and golf tours, and the basketball, table tennis and football leagues, including our own.
