Wembley historian asks Brent councillors to back murals bid

A local historian has repeated his calls for tiled murals showcasing part of England’s football history to be on display during this summer’s European Championships.
Philip Grant, of Wembley History Society, is concerned the murals – on the underpass at Bobby Moore Bridge on the approach to Wembley Stadium – will be covered with adverts during the tournament.
He continues to contest Brent Council’s claim that property developer Quintain has permission to display ‘light boxes’ along the entire walkway during “a limited number of event days”.
Mr Grant hopes to see at least a portion of the strip – showing England footballers in front of the old Wembley’s iconic ‘twin towers’ – on display, particularly as tournament organisers hope to see some fans attend several games at the ground. ....

Wembley History Society issues appeal of former Alperton business


A man who is writing a memoir is calling for the public in hope to learn more about a former business that played a significant part in his childhood.
The Wembley History Society is relaying out a plea from Rick Hoegberg, a retired engineer in Alaska, who wants to collect as much information as possible of a former timber merchant business in Alperton called Causland and Brown.
At the age of 11, Mr Hoegberg was invited to crew a Firefly dinghy with his best friend in a regatta at Rickmansworth Aquadrome.
Their dream was to explore the Grand Union Canal, and by saving pocket money and doing paper rounds, the pair managed to have enough money to design a small wooden cabin cruiser by the autumn of 1972. ....
