Weymouth Rotary Club fights off pandemic and wintery blues to raise cash for good causes

MEMBERS of a Weymouth organisation fought off the pandemic and the winter blues to raise cash for a good cause.
The Rotary Club of Weymouth raised £1,000 during a socially-distanced Christmas charity collection in the town centre for local charities including MV Freedom as well as The Nest in Weymouth.
The Rotary Club s annual Fayre in the Square event around Hope Square and the harbourside which includes raffles, social events, a charity cider bars, supermarket collections, had to be cancelled last yera due to Covid-19 restrictions. This year s event is also off, going ahead online only.
Club president Rose Bruce said: These events were ruled out due to Covid as have our usual convivial club nights and race nights at Pilgrim House. ....

George Miles receives certificate from Weymouth Rotary Club

A SELFLESS young boy has been surprised with a certificate and gift voucher in recognition of the work he has done in helping to feed those in need.
Last month, George Miles put his best foot forward and ran more than 10km and raised £285 which he used to buy essential items for Weymouth Foodbank.
As a thank you for his generosity, Weymouth Rotary Club surprised the 10-year-old with a certificate and a £50 Argos voucher.
George s dad Andy, a postman, said: We were absolutely gobsmacked when one of the members of the Rotary Club gave George the presents - we did not expect it at all. ....

10-year-old raises hundreds with 10k run

George Miles would usually spend his weekends playing football for the Redlands Bandits.
But with grassroots sports suspended due to the Covid pandemic, the schoolboy from Upwey wanted to do something worthwhile with his time to help those less fortunate.
So he put his best foot forward to run more than 10km - and raised £285 which he used to buy essential items for Weymouth Foodbank.
George s dad Andy, a postman, was surprised when his son came home from school and said he wanted to do a fundraiser.
He said: I think they must have said something at school about homeless people in need or about people going hungry because it came quite out of the blue that he wanted to raise money so he could donate food to our local foodbank. ....

A CHARITABLE Weymouth company has donated more than £1,000 to a foodbank.
Ultra Group, in Hampshire Road, has donated £1,035 to Weymouth Foodbank to support the local community in need during the Covid pandemic.
The electronics company were sponsors of an awards scheme, but due to the pandemic the event was cancelled and a refund of £900 was received.
Ultra spokesman, Bryan Hobbs said: With this refund we have purchased a £900 Morrisons gift card.
Morrisons have awarded a 15 per cent discount, making the total donation, £1,035.
With so many people unable to work at the moment, it’s now more important than ever to help where possible. ....
