The Vermont Senate on Thursday voted to override a veto attempt by Republican Gov. Phil Scott to kill a bill that would allow noncitizens to vote.
In a 20-10 vote, Vermont Democrats just barely achieved the two-thirds majority needed to override the governor’s veto of two separate bills – securing the House’s successful override vote Wednesday.
It appears that once again the Vermont elected Democrats show a complete disregard to what it means to be a citizen, Republican National Committeeman for Vermont Jay Shepard told Fox News. Their vote to override the Governor s veto disenfranchises those in Vermont who are citizens. ....

LaClair & Savage: Why are we not supporting our military retirees?

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.
For the past five-plus years, Vermont House Republicans have been working to exempt military retirement pay from state income taxes. Gov. Phil Scott has included this commonsense measure in every single budget he has proposed to the Legislature. In fact, Vermont is one of only three states that fully taxes military retirement income. Yet each and every year, the majority in Montpelier refuses to let this bill even be debated by the full House of Representatives. It simply dies slowly in committee.
But this April, things changed. The Vermont Democrats were eager to get a revenue-raising bill out of their committee, Senate Bill 53. This bill raises mutual fund fees by $6 million, the highest levels in the nation, and creates a new “cloud tax” on prewritten software. Bear in mind that these tax and fee increases are being proposed in a year when Vermont is receiving billions in unanticipated revenue windfalls a ....

Column | Grand Old Parting? Riot at U.S. Capitol Exposes Rifts in the VTGOP

The rift has been evident for decades. Former Republican governor
Jim Douglas traces the split all the way back to the fight between the conservative Proctor wing of the party and the moderate Gibson-Aiken faction, in the days when Vermont Democrats were so scarce that GOP politics were just about the only politics around. In the 1946 primary, moderate
Ernest W. Gibson Jr. beat incumbent Republican governor
Mortimer Proctor in a hard-fought race then went on to beat the Democrat with 80 percent of the vote.
Vermont Republicans have had a successful history, especially since the rise of a strong Democratic opposition in the 1960s, of papering over these divisions, which perhaps gives evidence they could do so again.  ....

Vermont Leaders, Of All Major Parties, Call for Removal of President Trump – NECN

Updated on January 7, 2021 at 6:39 pm
NBC Universal, Inc.
Vermont s most prominent politicians are calling for the resignation or removal from office of President Donald Trump, following Wednesday s assault on the U.S. Capitol which the president s critics insist was the result of his repeated false claims the 2020 election was stolen from him.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, each tweeted Thursday that Trump should leave office or be removed. Sanders even said the president must go before he incites more violence.
Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, was among the first from his party to call for the president to step down or be removed by his cabinet members or by an act of Congress. That call came Wednesday. ....
