This is âI Love Schoolâ week at Orchard Elementary in the South Burlington School District.
Students are participating in virtual events including math and science activities, and Zooming with local authors. These fun and educational events are all virtual, yet none of them are available to fully remote Orchard students.
Why is Orchard School denying fully remote students access to these events, as well as educational materials and other programs provided to in-person learners? As the parent of two fully remote Orchard students I have been asking these questions since September.
My emails and phone calls to Orchard School and the district have been met with a variety of responses, ranging from slight empathy to defensive and dismissive. These exchanges have produced no changes in the exclusion of remote learners from the Orchard learning community. ....

WESTMINSTER â The high per-pupil costs for the 315 students attending Bellows Falls Union High School attracted attention from a former school board member Wednesday night.
James McAuliffe of Bellows Falls, the former board member, questioned the current board and principal on why more hadnât been done to bring per-pupil costs down and avoid the financial penalty cap established by the Vermont Agency of Education.
Principal Christopher Hodsden told a Zoom gathering of about two dozen people, most of them either school employees or school board members, that he has cut $200,000 in spending, and that the proposed $7.3 million budget is actually 2 percent lower than the current budget of $7.5 million. ....

The vast majority of U.S. schools are relying on technology platforms more than ever before.
That means schools have been particularly affected when big tech providers like Zoom and Google have experienced temporary outages. Zoom was down on the first day of school for thousands of students across the country last fall, and the possibility of another outage for a key tech-based service always looms on the horizon.
For the Joliet school district in Illinois, this school year started off on a rough note with the Zoom disruption, followed by a Google outage, as well as some local Comcast internet service problems, all of which disrupted students’ learning. “At that point in time, we didn’t have a plan B,” said John Armstrong, the district’s director of technology. “We hadn’t gotten that far.” ....
