KAWC s Victor Calderón spoke with four members of the Class of 2021 from high schools in Yuma and San Luis.
Josue Sanchez said he felt motived to participate in online learning.

I felt like I had the attention span to do homework online, more so than some of my friends, said Sanchez, who is graduating from Kofa High School. “I think I liked (learning) online a little better than in person.”

Sanchez will attend Arizona State University in the fall. He said he wants to work in the medical field, as an X-ray technician at first and perhaps later as an ultrasound technician. ....

I can t think of a single migrant who s told me they ve come because of (President Joe) Biden, Williams said. It s just not the language people are using specifically.

Williams said the push factors for migrants has remained the same for years- poverty, gang violence and for some, natural disasters, such as hurricanes. The number of migrants coming to the U.S.-Mexico border in 2020 was down significantly, understandably due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

What I think we re seeing (now with more migrants) is a pent-up demand, Williams said. Pent up migration that would have been spread out over several months but instead is being a little more concentrated in this year. ....

Yuma Border Patrol Chief: Migrant Apprehensions Are Up, Agents Following COVID-19 Protocols

Yuma Sector Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Chris Clem spoke to KAWC in his first local media interview since he took office on Dec. 20.
Chief Clem said at this time last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning, the Yuma Sector was at just more than 7,000 migrant apprehensions. This year to date, it s more than 9,500 apprehensions. In October, the Yuma Sector averaged 25 apprehensions per day. The number of apprehensions has gone up each day since and so far in March, Clem said the Yuma Sector is averaging about 400 apprehensions per day.
We went from something reasonable to, all of a sudden, a big spike, Clem said. ....
