ESU Insider Grad Selected for Prestigious Film-Writing Training Program with Universal Studios

It’s been a wild ride that has taken writer Larry Santana ’06 from daily journalism to television production and from the East Coast to the West Coast and back a couple of times. But now that he’s settling into a prestigious film-writing training program, he couldn’t be happier.
Santana is one of just four writers selected from 1,500 applicants for the Universal Studios Writing Program, designed to empower voices that usually go unheard.
“Historically, there’s been a real dearth of opportunities for writers and directors of color, Hispanics like myself, women, the LGBTQ community, and a number of other underrepresented groups,” Santana says. “This program is a major ally in helping to break down those barriers, so that more diverse stories are told and shared with a global audience.” ....

Native planting project hoped to protect Tolaga Bay from logging debris

After years of discussions, it s hoped a native planting project announced by the area s largest forestry operation will help protect homes, waterways and coastlines.
Aratu Forests, one of New Zealand s 10 largest freehold forest plantations, has announced a 90-year right to plant land management agreement with sustainable land-use company, eLandNZ - with the backing of the Gisborne District Council.
The programme will see permanent native plantings established in parts of the 35,000 hectare estate which are unsuitable for timber plantation.
A riparian zone currently protected by a mature pine crop. The project will see this area convert to permanent native forest after harvesting of the commercial tree crop. ....

Royal Navy veteran from Loughton received France's highest honour five years ago this week

A veteran of two vital Second World War operations has said receiving France’s highest honour should ‘remind others of the thousands of young men who did not return home’.
Victor Walker, 90, from Loughton, served in the Royal Navy both during the Normandy landings of D-Day and in the Arctic Convoys, delivering essential supplies to the besieged USSR.
One-and-a-half years after the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Mr Walker has received the Legion of Honour for his “steadfast involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War .
It has been added to a raft others, including the esteemed Ushakov Medal from the Russian state for veterans of the Arctic Convoy. ....

Vicki Dunn braces for the impact of a pie that was tossed during a Dec. 14 United Way of the Coastal Empire-Effingham County fundraiser at the Effingham County Administrative Complex in Springfield.
