Jacinda Ardern Admits NZ-China Values Becoming ‘Harder to Reconcile’

New Zealand facing demands for sharper anti-China line
Over the past week, New Zealand’s Labour Party-led government has faced further attacks from the Australian and British media, and sections of the NZ media and political establishment, for its perceived failure to fully align with the US-led preparations for war against China.

New Zealand is a close ally of the US and a member of the top-level Five Eyes intelligence sharing network that includes the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s government, since it first came into office in 2017, has supported Washington’s militarisation in the Into-Pacific region, which is aimed at encircling China and maintaining US dominance through war if necessary. ....

Market has second thoughts about timing of first Fed hike

4/20/2021 10:56:52 AM GMT
Overview: Even as US yields edge higher, the dollar struggles. With the 10-year Treasury yields now at 1.62%, nine basis points above last week s lows, the greenback has turned mixed against the major currencies. After briefly slipping below JPY108, the dollar has recovered to around JPY108.55.  The euro firmed to $1.2080, and sterling pushed through $1.40 before seeing the gains pared.  Sterling is now lower on the day as are the Scandis.  Emerging market currencies are more mixed, and the JP Morgan Emerging Market Currency Index is snapping a five-day advance.  The dollar s weakness, where the Dollar Index is falling for the seventh consecutive session, maybe helping to unpin commodity prices.  Although gold is extended yesterday s reversals, base metals and oil are higher, and the CRB Index is at its highest level in over a month.  US equity futures have stabilized after yesterday s fall.  In the Asia Pacific region, equities were mixed, wi ....

By foreign affairs reporter Stephen Dziedzic
Another trans-Tasman brawl has erupted over Australia s controversial deportations policy after Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton labelled criminals being sent to New Zealand as trash .
The comments drew an angry political reaction in New Zealand, with Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta lashing out at Mr Dutton and New Zealand s Opposition calling on the government to retaliate.
The latest controversy from earlier this week, where the broadcaster was permitted to film and question handcuffed deportees as they were being led to a plane that would take them to New Zealand. ....
