Space may be “the final frontier,” but it’s becoming easier for financial advisors and their clients to invest in humankind’s desire to explore beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Three new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) focused on investing in space-oriented equities have launched in the past few weeks. The first was ARK Space Exploration & Innovation ETF ARKX-A from New York-based ARK Investment Management LLC, led by Catherine Wood. At the age of 58, when most people start looking ahead to retirement, Catherine Wood launched an investment management company in New York to capture the potential of a coming wave of technological change.
Almost seven years later, Ark Investment Management LLC has grown from a US$15-million venture into one in which the flagship exchange-traded fund (ETF) manages about US$18-billion in assets. Ark Innovation ETF ARKK-A is the largest actively managed ETF on any global exchange. It ranked in the first percentile among 604 funds in its class in 2020, according to Morningstar Research, with a 152.8-per-cent return. The ETF has struggled thus far in 2021, up only 0.5 per cent year-to-date. ....

Thematic ETFs challenge naysayers | Investment Executive

A January research paper from Ohio State University slammed specialty ETFs for poor risk-adjusted returns, high fees and lack of diversification, concluding that such funds “deliver a negative alpha of about –4%” annually.
“[T]hese [specialty] products compete for the attention of unsophisticated investors who chase past performance and neglect the risks arising from … under-diversified portfolios,” the paper states. “Specialized ETFs, on average, have generated disappointing performance for their investors.”
But Canadian ETF providers take issue with that notion, contending that ETFs with innovation themes are sustainable and that thematic funds can be beneficial when used appropriately. The returns of Canada’s top-performing thematic ETFs add credibility to that argument. ....

Emerge Canada Inc. (“Emerge”) today announced the final special year-end non-cash notional, reinvested income and capital gains distributions per unit (the “Distribution”) for Emerge ARK ETFs for the 2020 tax year, following continued growth of the funds. There is a reduction in the distribution per unit previously announced for EARK, EAGB and EAAI as the number of units outstanding has increased.
