Ray Eugene Fulbright, 88, Navy and Air Force veteran


OAK ISLAND Ray Eugene Fulbright, 88, peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021.
Ray was born Nov. 3, 1932, in Granite Falls, the second child born to Anne Maie and Jace Fulbright. After growing up in Granite Falls and graduating high school, Ray met and fell in love with Margaret Irene Jolley. They married July 29, 1952, then Ray entered the U.S. Navy and served six years. Upon discharge from the U.S. Navy, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving for another 18 years and was stationed in areas across the world.
During this time of service, Ray and “Rene” welcomed Ray Eugene “Chip” Fulbright Jr. and Sandra Lee Fulbright into their family. Ray was discharged honorably from service in 1974 and settled in Gastonia. There, Ray joined the sheriff’s department, working as a deputy until retirement in 1990. His retirement years were spent enjoying the beach and sound of Oak Island. Ray was always working on this home and property, enjoying the slower pace of ....

WILMINGTON Michael Farrel “Mike” Gardner, 72, passed away at his home Saturday, July 10, 2021.
Born Jan. 26, 1949, in Battle Creek, Michigan, he is survived by his wife, Deborra Reckmeyer Gardner; son, Matthew Gardner, and his wife, Vicky Gardner; two grandsons, Grayson and Gavin Gardner; stepdaughter, Erika Hall, and her husband, Brent Hall, and three grandchildren, Adrian, Mina and Grace Hall; stepson, Noah Landis, and his wife, Joyce Landis; two grandchildren, Mason and Emma Landis; sister, Teresa Merrick, and her husband, Dana Merrick; as well as dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews. On Sunday, May 2, 2021, Gay Lefebvre, 82, loving wife and mother passed away in Southport, NC. She was born November 15, 1938, in Middletown, CT to Ruth and Carl Byloff. Gay graduated from East Hampton High School, East Hampton CT, where she met her beloved husband of 60 years, Richard H. Lefebvre and they raised two daughters in Johnstown, NY.
Gay was a gifted artist and teacher. With two young children at home, she returned to school and graduated with high honors from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY in 1976. With over 30 years as an educator, Gay spent most of her career as a secondary level art teacher and chair of the art department for the Fonda-Fultonville Central School District. She loved teaching and impacting the lives of young people. She was known for her listening ear, her fiery spirit and her straight talk with her students.
