MedStar Georgetown’s School Health Center at Anacostia High
Michelle Francis walked past a student one morning at Anacostia High School where she works at a clinic run by MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center then looked back to see him stuff a sleeping bag and duffel into the bushes. Suspecting that the student was homeless, she worked with clinic and school staff to connect him and his family to housing.
“As a nurse, we are trained to be observant,” says Francis, 55, who has been an LPN for 11 years. “I might take a blood pressure and notice cutting on the arm. We had another student, her clothes were dirty. She said her parents didn’t have money for detergent.” ....

Two Montgomery County Council members reiterated on Monday their criticism of the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses the state is supplying. They say the county isn’t getting its fair share, a frustration that’s been brewing for weeks.
While the state says it is distributing vaccine doses largely in alignment with population, many of the doses it is counting are going to pharmacies, hospitals and other health-related entities. For example, less than a third of this week’s supply of doses went directly to the county for its vaccine clinics. ....

New year, new lives: DC-area hospitals announce first babies of 2021

As the world rang in a new year, the D.C. area also welcomed the first babies of 2021.
Adventist HealthCare said a baby boy weighing 6 pounds and 12 ounces was born to parents Michele Vicino-Coleman and her husband, Ricardo Coleman, at 12:30 a.m.
“I was like, ‘Wow this is, this is actually pretty, pretty neat, ” Vicino-Coleman said.
Vicino-Coleman is an English teacher at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring. She said she was excited to share some positive news amid the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
