"Not worth the risk": Some families do not want to return to school anytime soon

Both Carmona and Geo contracted COVID last fall. He had no symptoms, but she suffered a 103.5-degree fever, lost her sense of taste and smell, became dizzy and nauseous, was often out of breath, and had “the worst headache imaginable.”
Around the same time, Carmona’s grandmother also got COVID and spent more than a month in intensive care before dying.
After that suffering and loss, Carmona said she is determined to protect her son and the rest of her family from COVID and that means keeping Geo home from school.
“It’s not worth it,” Carmona said. “It’s not worth risking it a little bit even, especially for our children.” ....

COVID-19 vaccine access, not hesitancy, main barrier for San Diegans of color

A limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine combined with language and technology barriers are keeping many San Diegans of color waiting for their shot at immunity.
Most White San Diegans eligible for the vaccine have gotten a shot, with roughly 551 vaccinated per 1,000 eligible residents, compared to 527 for Latinos, 520 for Asians and 349 for Black San Diegans, according to data on current vaccinations from the county’s vaccine dashboard and eligibility estimates from the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

Some of the county’s demographic data, posted on its online dashboard, is poorly defined. Roughly 15 percent of those vaccinated are listed as “other race,” and 12 percent did not disclose their race or ethnicity. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said on Thursday that the county is still looking into the matter, noting that the dashboard combines data reported from various sources. ....

Column: San Diego once rejected Martin Luther King Jr., lets learn from it and be better

Print
San Diego has no shortage of history to reflect on during what should be a holiday of reverence, introspection and charity. But the bit of history that I can’t quite get away from is the time San Diegans rejected Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In January 1986 the same year Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated as a national holiday the San Diego City Council decided it wanted to rename a major roadway in honor of King, joining many large cities across the country that had similarly opted to rename streets or landmarks in honor of the Civil Rights icon. ....

Editorial: Mulling a run for California governor, Kevin Faulconer leaves a mixed legacy as San Diego's mayor

Print
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer is out of office and in the mix to challenge Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. But his record as mayor is remarkably checkered for a potential 2022 GOP gubernatorial candidate in the nation’s largest state, where only two Republicans have won statewide office this century a Hollywood action hero as governor in 2003 and 2006 and a tech titan (who has since left the party) as insurance commissioner in 2006.
Faulconer replaced disgraced former Mayor Bob Filner in 2014 and easily won re-election in 2016. Then his second term was rocky. Now the former San Diego State University student body president, public relations executive and city councilmember has a history at City Hall that will be cherry-picked by admirers and critics alike to paint a portrait of a mayor who did well in trying circumstances or one who was in over his head. He deserves praise for how he helped the city’s homeless population and how he managed the pandemic. Yet in ....
