When Westfield Technical Academy student Zackary Cernak found an iron ball, corroded and cracked, in the woods in Russell, determining what it was left an impression related to the rich history and heritage of our region. Was
it a cannonball from the revolutionary war? Perhaps it could be an older cannonball dated back to the French and Indian War? Was it a part used for industrial grinding?

“Something seemed a little bit off,” said Cernak.
What he found is an iron ball, corroded and cracked with flakes of metal peeling from it, weighing in at a little more than 8 pounds and just more than 4 inches in diameter. Cradled in his hands, it looks like a rust-colored candlepin bowling ball. ....
