Westborough Lions Club host Rubber Ducky Derby

The Westborough Lions Club recently held its first annual Rubber Duck Derby at the Mill Pond Spillway in Westborough.
Due to the pandemic, it was an all-virtual event with online duck sales and the race broadcast on Facebook Live. The club held the race to raise funds for a $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior at Westborough High School this June. A total of 341 ducks were adopted by the public and raced down the Spillway to the finish line.
It was a contested race as the lead changed several times, with the winning duck, #2000, adopted by Greg Conlan, taking the lead in the last few seconds of the race. As the adopter of the first-place finisher, Conlan netted 50% of the proceeds with a check for $1,310.70. ....

The Westborough Lions Club is offering of a $1,000 post-secondary education scholarship for a Westborough High School senior graduating this June.
The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has shown outstanding commitment to community service and has a strong academic background, but who has also overcome some hardship or adversity in order to achieve their goals. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 15.

The Westborough Lions Club will host its first Rubber Duck Derby at 11 a.m. April 10.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the event will be held virtually via Facebook Live from the Mill Pond Spillway and will be rebroadcast on YouTube and Westborough TV a few days later.
Proceeds will be used to fund a scholarship for a Westborough High School student who excels in academics, leadership and community service. Participants can adopt ducks in the following increments: one for $10, three for $25, and more in increments of three. The person whose duck races down the Spillway and comes in first at the end will win 50% of the event proceeds. ....

Low Vision Network provides help to visually impaired
The Massachusetts Lions Low Vision Network has established a substantial network of practitioners within the state who specialize in low vision assessment and treatment. They are providing low vision tools and other solutions such as hand magnifiers, computer technology, telescopes, binocular systems and more to improve the quality of life for Massachusetts residents who are visually impaired.
According to a press release from the Westborough Lions Club, Lions volunteers are playing a major role in this program by helping visually impaired patients to make appointments, providing rides to and from the appointment if necessary, and answering questions that come up. ....

Westborough High School Venya Khare recently won the Westborough Lions Club s Youth Speech Contest for 2020-21.
She, together with seniors Neil Kale, Nikita Sarin, and freshman, Nicole Nguyen, participated in this year s contest with speeches on the topic of “Is winning everything?” Due to the pandemic, the competition was held via Zoom. This is the sixth year that the Westborough Lions have sponsored the contest.
Each student s speech was to be no less than five minutes and no more than eight minutes in length. Point penalties were assessed for any deviation from these parameters. At this local level contest, the students were allowed to read directly from their manuscripts. Three independent judges critiqued each speech on delivery, effectiveness and text. The student with the most first place finishes as determined by the judges using their scoring matrices was deemed the w ....
